You have finally found a shag rug that has just enough attitude to perfectly highlight the features of your apartment or home. Having said that, you might be wondering how to keep that beauty looking and feeling good for as long as possible. The good news is that you can keep your new shag carpet looking great for years to come if you follow these ten easy tips:

  1. You can extend the life of your rug even with routine vacuuming by disengaging or removing the beater brush from your vacuum.
  2. You should roll up your rug every three months, turn it over so that the backing is facing up, and vacuum it using the beater bar on your vacuum cleaner. As you vacuum the back, dirt that has been trapped between the fibers will be dislodged. Remove dirt and debris from the floor by rolling the rug up again and removing it from the floor. Repeat the process two more times. Last but not least, reposition the rug so that the shag side is facing upwards.
  3. Make sure to remove your shoes before walking on your beautiful shag, and ask your guests to do the same. There's no reason not to! It's only polite to do so!
  4. Natural fiber shags should be kept away from children who have liquids in their hands (and adults who have beverages that stain, such as wine) at all times. In the event of a spill, you should apply dry carpet cleaning powder as soon as possible. Please follow the instructions on the package for how to use the product. There are several DIY carpet cleaning tips that you can use if you do not have cleaning powder on hand.
  5. For routine cleaning you can use a comb vacuum attachment or a hand comb/brush made specifically for this purpose.
  6. The best way to clean acrylic rugs is to use clean white towels and spray a stain remover on them. Place one towel under the rug, and lightly spray another towel with the stain lifter to help it lift the stain. Gently wipe each stained fiber with a soft cloth. The rug should be allowed to air dry before it is used.
  7. You should never wash or dry a shag rug in the washing machine or dryer!
  8. It is a good idea to clean all area rugs once a year.
  9. You can restore the fluff in a hand-knotted wool rug by gently brushing it with a soft brush to restore the fluff.
  10. You can kill mold and bacteria on your rug by hanging it outdoors for 2-3 hours of sunlight twice a year.

Use these ten tips every time your shag rug needs a boost, and you'll enjoy this timeless style for years to come.
